14th – 16th February 2020
The three day group workshop is the most advanced workshop on offer from Williams Handmade, however, everyone will be working at their own pace so it is equally suitable for complete beginners as it is for people who may have some previous experience.
This workshop is exciting because you will learn pattern making for leather bags and design your own bag! The workshop will begin with basic pattern cutting (for people who have experience making dress patterns, these techniques are different) for a simple coin purse or card case so you can learn the basics. You will then learn how to use these patterns to cut out the leather and construct the coin purse. You will then learn how to sew this together using traditional saddle stitch before finishing the edges.
Following this you will have some time to design your own bag (please have some ideas about what you would like to make before you arrive). You will learn how to make the patterns for the design of your choice and then make the bag from start to finish. Everyone will work individually, creating unique bags, so the techniques you learn may vary buy may include: cutting leather, traditional saddle stitch, pattern cutting for bags, construction techniques, making an adjustable strap, finishing edges, adding fittings and buckles. It may be possible to line the bags, however as this takes longer, it would need to be a simpler design to allow time for this.
You do not necessarily need to make a bag on this workshop, you could make multiple smaller products, such as notebook cover, belts, laptop case, etc. If you would like to do something different please contact me to discuss first to check it will be possible and that I have all of the supplies required.
The workshop is 9.30am – 5pm each day, the price of the workshop is £370 for three days. The price includes lunch and refreshments each day, pattern card, threads, edge finishes and glues used throughout and the leather to make your first small coin purse/card case. The price does not include any leather or fittings used to make your products, you will be charged for this depending on what you use. A small bag may cost around £30 and a large bag around £55. A £100 deposit is required to book the course and the balance of £270 is paid during the workshop, if you prefer to pay in full please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
All workshops are taught by Sarah Williams. Sarah has a design in craft and a Masters specialising in Leather Accessories from London College of Fashion, she has over 10 years experience working in the leather goods industry and running her own leather accessories business.
